GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a powerful free image editor, but removing backgrounds manually takes time. Follow this guide to learn the process — and discover a faster way.
Launch GIMP and open the image you want to edit. Go to File → Open and select your file. GIMP supports JPG, PNG, WebP, and most common image formats.
In the toolbar on the left, click the Fuzzy Select Tool (also called the Magic Wand). Its icon looks like a magic wand with a star. This tool selects contiguous areas of similar color — perfect for backgrounds.
Tip: If the background has multiple colors, hold Shift and click to add more areas to your selection.
Click on the background area of your image. The Fuzzy Select Tool will highlight the area with a moving dotted outline (marching ants). Adjust the Threshold slider in the tool options to control how much of the background gets selected — a higher threshold selects a wider color range.
With the background selected, press Delete on your keyboard. You will see a checkerboard pattern where the background used to be — this represents transparency. If some background areas remain, use the Eraser Tool to clean up edges manually.
To preserve the transparent background, you must export as PNG. Go to File → Export As, choose a filename ending in .png, and click Export. In the export dialog, make sure "Save color values from transparent pixels" is checked.
GIMP requires 5 manual steps per image. With Erase Background Pro, just upload and the AI does the rest — free, instant, no sign-up required.
