Need to remove a background from an image in PowerPoint? The built-in Remove Background tool can help. Follow this guide — and discover a faster AI-powered alternative.
Open your PowerPoint presentation. Go to Insert → Pictures → This Device and select the image you want to edit. The image will appear on your slide.
Click on the image to select it. You will see the Picture Format tab appear in the ribbon at the top of the window.
In the Picture Format tab, look for the Remove Background button on the far left. Click it. PowerPoint will automatically detect and highlight the background areas in magenta.
PowerPoint's automatic detection is not always perfect. Use Mark Areas to Keep (pencil icon with a +) to draw lines over areas you want to keep that were incorrectly marked. Use Mark Areas to Remove (pencil icon with a −) to mark background areas that were missed.
Tip: Zoom in for detailed areas like hair or fur — this is where PowerPoint struggles most.
When you are satisfied with the selection, click Keep Changes in the ribbon. The magenta areas will be removed, leaving your subject on a transparent or slide-colored background. You can now move, resize, or use the image as needed.
PowerPoint requires manual refinement of background areas. With Erase Background Pro, AI handles everything — try it free with no sign-up.
