What does "transparent PNG" actually mean?

A PNG with a transparent background stores a fourth channel per pixel called alpha. Alpha controls opacity: 255 is fully opaque, 0 is fully transparent, and anything in between is a semi-transparent or soft pixel — often the cause of ugly fringes and halos when you place an image on a colored background.

This checker tells you three things quickly: whether an alpha channel exists at all, how much of your image is fully transparent, and how many pixels are in that risky "soft edge" zone. If your image shows no transparency, it is almost certainly a flattened JPG or an export that never had its background removed — run it through a background remover and re-export as PNG.
